Pavel Luiz Tavares de Carvalho

A Brazilian filmmaker and audiovisual artist recognized for his work with experimental documentaries and audiovisual installations.

With an international profile, he has created works in several countries. Some of his documentaries include Jasy Porã (Argentina), Алексндр (Russia), 小寨 (China), Nucas de Tarkovsky (video essay), País de Blancos, the feature film Ojo de Mar (Argentina) and the performative documentary Diário de um Crime (Portugal). He was selected for Talents BAFICI, VGIK Summer School, Looking China Program, the Young Art Biennial (Argentina), and won scholarships to be Fellow at the Flaherty Seminar (NY, USA) and Dear Doc in the Docskingdom (Portugal). Was selected to the Filmmaking Seminar of UnionDocs and Doclisboa four times (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023).

He studied Image and Sound Design at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and has a postgraduate degree in Cinema from the Torcuato Di Tella University (UTDT) having classes with Lucrecia Martel and James Benning. He was an archivist and professor of Audiovisual Project at UBA, where he taught documentary and Latin American cinema. He was awarded scholarships and distinctions for his achievements as a student and professor.

Currently lives in Europe, where he has collaborated with various artists and institutions, including the artistic platform Cultivamos Cultura, cultural associations as PédeXumbo and CACO, Movimento LAB - collaborative cinema laboratory, and was co-creator of the participatory art project BOWING, production of Lavrar o Mar. With his project Diário de um Crime, he participated in the Arché LAB of the Porto/Post/Doc festival; he taught at the Summer School of the School of Arts at the Catholic University of Porto. He was an Artist-in-Residence at the Colos School, a project of the National Plan for the Arts of Portugal. He was the integral audiovisual director of international projects such as Traveling Plant (Leonardo/Olats [FR]) and Roots&Seeds (Quo Artis [ES], Ars Electronica [AU], Leonardo/Olats, Universitat de Barcelona).

Part of his current work focuses on audiovisual installations, including projects such as "Sphere 4","the Human Egg", "Como Ensillar un Caballo Bajo el Volcán Domuyo", " Eu, Tu e o Campo", "Bowing", and S4 Waterworld.

He has an artistic duo with Natalia Lis, named Samambaia, and together they have collaborated on various projects, such as the multidisciplinary "TRÉMULA."

As a filmmaker, Pavel has experience and works in all areas of his art, from writing to editing and presentation. Pavel's work explores the uniqueness of different cultures and identities, the borders and their intersections. He seeks to offer a distinct perception of time and space through his experimental audiovisual art. Pavel's artistic achievements have been recognized with awards for best short film, best experimental video, and best photography, among others.
